Common Card Settings

When you create a new field, there are a variety of common settings you can adjust. Not all are listed in the documentation but this provides an overview of what to look for in the settings.

Type Specific Settings

For each field type there is a block of settings based upon the type. For example the image below shows the settings available for Number fields.

The details vary based upon the field type, but all settings include inline help using the ? icons. In this case you can adjust the way the number is show, the formatting, and other settings about how the number is presented. Explore the various field types to see what is available.

Field Display Options

All fields have a section of options that determine how the field appears on the cards.

  • Card Front: You can choose if the name and/or value should show on the "front" of the card in the lists. This can be used to have some fields that only show up when you open the card details.
  • Show Activity: When this is enabled, the system automatically collects an audit log of changes to this field and adds it to the Trello card.
  • Hide field on new cards by default: This setting controls the default visibility. When you have a field that you only want to show on some cards but not all, it is often useful to hide the field by default. Then if you want to show it on the card you can adjust the visibility settings when viewing the card. (see Field Visibility)
  • Help Text: you can set text to that will show next to the label on the card to provide help to users about what they should fill in on to that field. This can be great to provided additional context for your board users.
  • Placeholder: you can set the value that shows in a field when nothing has been set. The can be used to provide form style layouts that guide users through filling out all the fields as they go.
  • Single Card Field: this is an advanced setting that lets you mark a field as only being connected to one card. This should only be used when you want to do things like cross card formulas or other specific things that restrict a field to a single card. If you simply want to adjust the visibility of a field it is better to use the field visibility settings.
